Inspired by real events, the narrative begins in Harbin, China, a city with heavy Russian influence. Lina lives a relatively peaceful life there until the Japanese invade Manchuria and, later on, the Chinese Communists rise to power. Forced to flee, Lina manages to secure a visa to Brazil. An inexplicable impulse leads Lina to visit a fortuneteller who proves to be a special person with an uncommon gift. It is this fortuneteller who reveals upcoming events in Linas life. Meanwhile, Arcadi escapes Germany just before the start of World War II and lands in Brazil, where he meets Lina and starts a family. Through conversations with their grandson, Alef, Lina and Arcadi tell the continuing saga of their lives before their respective arrivals in Brazil and the very different life they lived, inspired by a mysterious book Lina received from the fortuneteller as a farewell gift before his death, afterward.
